2019 marks 50 years since the date that many mark as the beginning of the “Gay Pride Movement”. In the early morning hours of July 28, 1969, on a backstreet of Greenwich Village in New York City, the somber mood of a little bar, The Stonewall Inn, was broken by yet ANOTHER police raid. For the patrons that night, many of them drag queens, this was not a good night to be harassed. So, they fought back. Their resistance spilled over into the streets where others joined them. The riot did not end that night. And the riots evolved into action. The images and words of that crowd spread on television and in magazines, and others saw them and agreed: Enough is Enough. This year, Hawaii Island LGBTQ Pride celebrates this anniversary with our theme, “50 & Fierce”.
